The follow-up story to If I Stay is Where She Went and I was actually looking forward to this more than the first book.
Title: Where She Went
Author: Gayle Forman
Genre: Contemporary – Romance
Age Classification: Young Adult
Publisher: Penguin (Speak)
Release: April 5, 2011
First of all, it is not from Mia’s point of view in this novel, it is from Adam’s. Adam was Mia’s boyfriend at the time of the accident and if you have read the first book you will all know what he did. I will try not to spoil anything in case you want to read If I Stay, but you will probably figure it out anyway.
Basically, Adam is about to go on tour with his band but he is very unhappy with his life. Nothing turned out the way he hoped it would and he is angry and upset about everything that happened with the accident and the events that followed.
SPOILER ALERT, the musical pair are not together anymore, but Adam happens to walk past the venue Mia is performing at and watches the show. Afterwards, the two go on a goodbye tour of the city as both of them are about to leave it behind while the tour.
Just like in the first book, the story flicks between past and present, which I think works better in Where She Went. It does not feel as random, more like it is there to enhance the present story or help the reader make sense of what is going on. Purpose, that is what I like.
However, just as I did with the first one, I have an issue or two with this book. One, it was kind of slow, borderline boring, at times. Two, again, the ending. Maybe I just don’t like positivity but the ending felt way too easy and unrealistic, at least it is unrealistic in my world.
Star Rating: ☆☆☆
As with the first book, the Goodreads rating is 3-stars because I liked it, but it needed to be more for this story to warrant two books. I feel this could have been condensed down and added to the first book, it just would have been a slightly bigger novel and it could have been a decent standalone.
So tell me your thoughts on the book. If you have read it, did you like it?
Until next time bibliophiles!
