Review – I Was Here by Gayle Forman

Gayle Forman has written some emotional books, but the one that hit me the most was I Was Here.
It is a confusing and painful time for those left behind when someone dies, but even more so when the loved one has chosen to end their life. I have had someone close to me take their own life and it left me with a range of emotions, many which were reflected in the book.

Title: I Was Here

Author: Gayle Forman

Genre: Contemporary

Age Classification: Young Adult

Publisher: Simon & Schuster

Format: paperback

Release: January 27, 2015

I started this book while halfway through another. I needed a break from the other story but I think this one is a book that needs to be tackled on its own. I think it was a great story of how those left behind struggle. It scared me how real it felt and how much I felt like Cody, our main character, while reading this book.

I Was Here focused on the suicide of Cody’s best friend Meg, a girl described in a way that made her seem larger than life. It was because of how she portrayed herself that made accepting her death so difficult for Cody, even more so that it was her choice.

Cody is asked by Meg’s parents to collect all of her things from where Meg had been living while at school. It is here that Cody’s journey begins. Tiny breadcrumbs of suspicion are planted in her head by some of the things she discovers on Meg’s laptop. At first this seems like a wild hunt where there is nothing to be hunted. However, Cody refuses to move on without discovering the whole truth. With help from Meg’s roommates and a guy who screwed her over, Cody dives into the world her friend had been a part of unearthing some ugly truths.

Now, what is a YA(ish) novel without a little romantic interest thrown in to stir the pot? I saw it coming from the moment he showed up. The ‘I will never sleep with you’ thing that came a little later also gave it away. Ben is the guy you should always stay away from. Like, keep a dozen armed soldiers form a protective circle around you and order them to shoot if he comes within 50 feet of you because he is bad news. I’m sure you will all know what happens based on this.

I think Cody is a little nutty for digging into the why behind Meg’s suicide. I wouldn’t have done it. Not because I didn’t care for the person, but because I wouldn’t have the guts to do half of what Cody did.

Star Rating: ☆☆☆☆

For me, I Was Here was a 4-star book on Goodreads. I recommend the book but with caution. It deals with a very serious topic and could be triggering.

If you are feeling suicidal, please seek help!! Family, friends, professionals, whichever you feel more comfortable with, just please get help. You are worth every second life has given you, please do not cut your life short. I understand what it feels like to want it all to end. In fact, I tried to end it, but I am glad I failed to go through with it. I am in physical pain most days, yay my sucky health and body, and some days just feel like a dark cloud is coming to swallow me up, but I know at the end of the day life is still worth it.

For those who have read I Was Here, what did you think of it?
For those who haven’t, would you read it?

Until next time bibliophiles!
