Do you ever come across a book and have low hopes of enjoying it but then it completely blows you out of the water? That was what Unearthed by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner was like for me and mostly because it is sci-fi. I now need to rethink my opinion of the genre because WOW!
A quick note before I get reviewy – I went to the Unearthed book launch in Melbourne and this water bottle was one of the ‘treasures’ we were given. At the time it seemed a little odd to me at the time, but it makes perfect sense after reading the book. I am not sure if the intention was to compliment the book or not, but it does!
Author: Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner
Genre: Science Fiction – Action and Adventure
Age Classification: Young Adult
Publisher: Allen & Unwin Australia

January 9, 2018 in the US
Amelia is a scavenger and Jules a scholar. The two team up on the planet they call Gaia to utilise the skills the other has – Jules the knowledge of the glyphs/language and Amelia the physical skills of a scavenger.
The chapters had alternating POVs which allowed us to view the events from both Amelia and Jules views and find out how they were thinking and feeling during the many twists, turns and mysteries of this novel. Both characters were well formed making them relatable and easy to picture. I also liked that while from very different backgrounds, the two find common ground and work together. Our world needs more of that!
The action-packed journey these two take through the Undying temple on Gaia is full of puzzles and mathematics that I can only imagine being fascinating. I am most definitely like Jules in that I would want to spend hours, days, weeks, etc., studying it all!
I was consistently enthralled with the plot and found myself thinking about what would happen next when I, unfortunately, had to put the book down.
The writing style was consistent throughout the novel and the story flowed really well, something I actually was not expecting from a book of this format by two authors. In fact, if there were not two names on the cover, I would have assumed it was all written by the same person.
Star Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆
I loved Unearthed so it was easy to give it 5 stars! It has also been brilliantly set up for the second novel – it can go many different ways so it will be interesting to see which way Kaufman and Spooner choose!
If you are a fan of sci-fi, adventure stories and/or Illuminae, I would recommend you get yourself a copy! While the book has already been released in Australia, the US release of Unearthed is January 9, 2018. If you live in the US, also check out Amie Kaufman’s website to see if Amie and Meagan are stopping at a bookstore near you!
