Cassie Tam is a P.I. in New Hopeland where technological developments have led to virtual reality addicts, tech shifters, and an interesting playground for crimes. Cassie is a little rough around the edges and it is clear from the start that she has some personal demons, but they do not affect her investigatory skills. Also, her AI familiar, Bert, sounds adorable and makes her investigation all the more interesting!
Lori Redwood is a tech shifter and the sister of recently deceased Eddie Redwood. She refuses to believe her brother would overdose on a drug he had always refused to touch as it would prevent him getting a job with a Pro company. Convinced the police did not look into the case enough, she goes to Cassie hoping that she will be able to uncover the truth.
When faced with a seemingly simple case, Cassie takes it thinking it will be easy money. It does not seem so easy when the accidental overdose starts looking more like murder. As Cassie starts uncovering more about the case, she also starts facing people from her past and wondering about her future.
The setting of the novel seemed like a not-so-distant American city filled with apartment buildings. I pictured a dark, dirty, slightly rundown looking city with the technology being the metaphorical beacon of light. Personally, the most interesting element was the tech shifters. I found everything from their personas to how their exoskeletons work fascinating, though I would probably be as nervous as Cassie if I were faced with them in my everyday life.
The mystery of the investigation was really good and it was almost impossible to fit all the pieces of the puzzle together until the very end. The pacing worked well and I enjoyed the writing; even the explanatory parts that usually bother me felt necessary and educational in a positive way. I also really liked how the characters interacted as it felt natural and I could easily picture these conversations taking place.
Star Rating: ☆☆☆☆
